There are only a few artists that I will go anywhere to see perform live. Of course, Lalah Hathaway is one. The Revelations and Tre’ Williams are another. It’s because of the soul that they bring with them to the stage. Every single time. And after seeing her perform a few times in the past few months, Nigeria’s own Nneka is now on that short list. Her new album, Concrete Jungle, is in stores now, and she’s been making the rounds. I saw her last month at the pre-Grammy Brunch in LA, and she rocked the house with her hit, “V.I.P. (Vagabonds In Power).”
Last week, she was featured at NYC’s own SOBs to promote Jungle, which, much like the aforementioned song, unfolds like a call to arms. Track after track of passion, brought to life by Nneka’s urgent vocals. It’s a must-have. The diminutive diva sat down for an interview with the venue, and cited her influences (some may surprise you) and why she loves music.
