Friday, April 6, 2012 will go down in history as… well, actually, as the Friday before Friday, April 13th, but also, as the night Lalah Hathaway and Eric Roberson bared their souls in Los Angeles. The scene was Club Nokia in LA Live, in the heart of downtown. The Lakers were getting beat across the street (word on the street was that Andrew Bynum got ejected from the game on purpose so he could come check out the show), and the two soul artists were laying down some serious beats of their own.
In a show that featured one of Roberson’s now-famous impromptu songs (“Popsicle” lol), DJ Lalah Hathaway (yes. she. did), the majesty of Toni Scruggs on background vocals (her freestyle during “Summertime” was something magical), and an All-Star jam session that featured Anita Baker, Sheila E., Kenny Lattimore, Sy Smith, B Slade and Rahsaan Patterson, it was, surprisingly, another moment that made this night special.
In fact, it was the night Eric Roberson became my hero. Check the clip below of the two performing “Dealing,” a track from Roberson’s 2009 album Music Fan First, and you’ll understand why. Boom.
