The Voice
I had no idea what to expect when NBC announced that yet another singing competition show would hit the airwaves this past spring. I mean, I thought I knew…figured it would be a knock-off of the already successful, yet old-around-the-gills American Idol, where the powers-that-be pick and choose who they want on the show, and then suck America in with their sob back stories and get them to vote for who they think is cutest will sell the most records. Yawn.
Man, was I wrong. The Voice had me at the first spinning chair. It was the contestants, who were all rough around the edges, who had previous chances in the industry yet never really caught on. It was the judges, Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton, all of whom were successful in their own right–superstars, even–but even they were all a bit off, or quirky, and used that skill to help them succeed. Mostly, it was the premise, that if you liked the contestant’s voice, and only if you did, would you hit a button, spin your chair around, and bid for them to be on your team.
It was all amazing. Every single week of it. One of the many highlights for me came during one of the sing-offs (no relation to the other NBC show of that name), where two contestants fighting to stay on a team sang “with” one another, in duet form. Except, only one would be able to move on. This one, a battle between Niki Dawson and Vicci Martinez, was just downright “Perfect.” Boom.
