You don’t have to be a lover of spoken word to appreciate Unspoken, the new project from Bigg Milt. Just a lover of music. And the truth. Because it’s that combination, brought to life by the powerful message–and golden pipes–of motivational speaker Milton Creagh that makes the album a must-have.
It’s that truth, that we still have work to do, that serves as the theme that runs through the album. It’s the same truth that Creagh learned while growing up on Chicago’s south side listening to the albums of world leaders like John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. The same message he dispenses to the thousands of high school students that he speaks to each year.
It’s his clever use of beats that buoy the message. It’s that added layer, supported by gorgeous piano chords and outrageously talented singers, that draw you in. The proverbial spoonfuls of sugar that help the necessary medicine go down.
That’s especially the case on the tracks “Lady Gold,” where he does what’s seemingly taboo these days, giving tough love to a wayward daughter, and “What’s Going On,” where he channels a character named Dope, who breaks down the ills of our country so clearly. Truth.

Another standout on the album is “Apology,” which is all about words–the ones we never say, the ones we shouldn’t say, and the ones we actually need to say. It’s definitely Milt’s most pointed message, and acts as a crescendo that wraps the entire project.
His tributes to the past, including the songs “Granddaddy,” and my favorite, “Block Party,” serve to balance everything out with a much needed nod to nostalgia.

Overall, a wonderful project from a gifted linguist that will be a welcome addition to your musical library. It brings to light everything that needs to be said, which of course makes its title all the more ironic.
Yes, Unspoken is a combination of old school cool and present-important wrapped in a seamless musical shell. But more than that, Unspoken is the much-needed truth we need in our lives.

The first time I heard the Unspoken Cd I heard exactly what the title said. Words that we think or feel but never say, say much or say at all. The words, the music all brougth together with his voice was a perfect fusion.
